Housing Conducts Major Work in Upperclass Buildings over Summer 2024
River and Hogan refresh conducted, air conditioning added to four major residence halls, and electronic lock work extended to more buildings
The summer recess provides teams on campus with the opportunity to conduct project work in buildings like residence halls. Here’s a rundown of the major updates made for the new academic year.
Hogan and River Halls Renovation
Major work was conducted in Hogan and River Halls, two popular upperclass residences.
In Hogan, interior upgrades and ADA improvements were made to elevate the building’s visual appeal, functionality, and user experience. Upgrade of public spaces in all apartments included living rooms, pantries, corridors, student bedrooms, half baths, and separate shower rooms.
In River, all bedrooms, common rooms, and public spaces throughout the building have been refreshed to create a more comfortable, inviting, and efficient residential experience. This work includes new lighting, flooring, electrical upgrades, open-style kitchen cabinetry, plumbing fixtures, and more.

Air Conditioning Added to Four Buildings
To help residents stay comfortable at the end of the summer, air conditioning units have been added to four major buildings: Hogan, McBain, River, and Ruggles Halls. This brings the total of newly air-conditioned rooms to 1,800 residents, and 4,132 residents across the portfolio.
The units will remain in-room for the academic year and will be installed with all-weather proofing and insulation in preparation for the cooler seasons.
This builds on an effort started last year, when air conditioning was added to First-Year buildings.
Electronic Locks Added to Additional Buildings
Electronic Lock Progress
As part of a multi-year plan to modernize access to the Housing portfolio, an electronic lock system is being implemented hall by hall. Not only does this enable students to use their CUID as a room key, but the project is also an upgrade in hardware and systems, providing better access management and system-wide improvements. Started in the Summer 2023, nearly 70% of the portfolio will be completed by the start of this academic year.
