What are Health & Safety Inspections?
Health & Safety Inspections are when University staff, including representatives from Residential Life, Housing, and Fire Safety, enter your assigned living space to visually inspect for health and safety concerns.
Inspections are mandatory and cannot be rescheduled.
What happens during the inspection?
Staff will enter your room and conduct a “plain sight” inspection to:
- Certify that safety equipment is code-compliant and functioning.
- Ensure that residents do not have prohibited items and that their space is being properly maintained according to the Guide to Living Cleaning Expectations.
- Staff will not open drawers, closets, or anything that is closed.

How should I prepare for the inspection?
You will receive a reminder 48 hours before the inspection date. Although you are not required to be present for the inspection, you should prepare for staff to enter your space, after knocking and announcing themselves.
- Remove prohibited items from your room. This includes halogen lamps, candles, hot pot-style coffee makers, toaster ovens, non-approved ACs, and other prohibited items.
- Clean your space. This includes your room and other shared spaces within your assignment, such as bathrooms and kitchens.
- Submit a service request for any facilities issues (missing smoke detector, broken equipment, etc.).
- Raise your window blinds on the day of the inspection. This allows staff to check your window stops and expedites the inspection process.
