Building History
About the living space
611 West 112th Street is a 6-floor building that will offer 76 doubles and 7 singles. Each floor will have (7) single-use bathrooms, as well as a common space with a kitchenette, seating, and television. The lower level will also have a lounge. The building is fully accessible with an entrance ramp and elevator, as well as student rooms and bathrooms designed to meet accessibility requirements.
The building’s unique “H” style layout creates two interior courtyards, plus a third courtyard in the rear of the building for residents to enjoy outdoor space. Like other buildings within the portfolio, hours and access to the courtyard will be managed to align with community standards.
Columbia’s first fossil fuel free residential building
As part of Columbia's Plan 2030 sustainability goals and in compliance with Local Law 97, the building will be fossil fuel free, with an estimated 43% reduction in carbon emissions compared to a standard NYC dormitory. The building is on course for U.S. Green Building Council LEED® Silver certification in Building Design + Construction – which would be Columbia’s first undergraduate residence hall to achieve LEED certification. Sustainable elements that are expected to contribute to the LEED Silver rating include clean construction practices, building energy efficiency, reduced water use, indoor air quality, and more. Additionally, the building’s roof has green roof trays, a planting material that provides building insulation and reflects heat.
Specialized heating and cooling system
To further enhance our sustainability efforts, each student room is equipped with a heating and cooling unit. The specialized system is connected to window sensors to automatically pause system function if the windows are open – a unique feature of the building’s energy efficiency measures.
Substantial construction for the building is anticipated to be completed by the end of the year, with the DOB inspection expected to occur in January 2025.
