Summer Work Planned Near Residence Halls

The following projects may impact your access to some residential buildings over the summer. Please follow directional signs at work sites.

Furnald Hall Lawn Stairs

Columbia University is planning to construct a new exterior stair at Furnald Hall Lawn. The scope of work will include the removal of existing landscaping and excavation of existing fill at location of new stair; installation of new reinforced cast-in-place concrete foundations; installation of new compacted fill and aggregate base; and installation of new granite steps in mortar setting bed including provisions for new anchors. 

Start Date: This project is anticipated to be started on May 29 and completed by July 29.

Work hours: 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday

Impact: Expect moderate noise from excavation equipment’s and other impacts typically associated with construction projects. 

Façade Cleaning for Wallach, Hartley, John Jay and  Furnald Hall

Columbia University is performing façade cleaning of four building entrances at John Jay, Wallach, Hartley and Furnald Halls. The scope of work will include the cleaning of existing stone facades, first with the water cleaning method followed by the chemical method.

Start Date: This project is anticipated to be started on June 5 and completed by July 15.

Work Hours: 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday

Impact: Expect minor noise from the cleaning equipment.

John Jay Areaways Rehabilitation

Columbia University is performing repairs to the areaways on the eastern portion of 114th Street and Amsterdam Avenue. The scope of work includes the installation of new metal sidewalk grating, support structure, access doors; replacement of granite pavers and brick pavers; and concrete spall and crack repair. 

Start Date: This project is anticipated to be started on June 5 and completed by July 28.

Work hours: 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday

Impact: Expect loud noise due to construction activities. During construction, an alternate pathway will be provided due to the closure of the sidewalk and left lane, temporary pedestrian pathway will be created,  directional signage will be utilized to direct pedestrians during the duration of the project. 

Wallach ADA Ramp        

Columbia University is performing renovation to the ADA entrance ramp to bring it into compliance with the current building code. The scope of work will include the removal of existing concrete ramp and removal of granite steps; installation of new widen ADA ramp, brick pavers, and new granite steps and new handrails.

Start Date: This project is anticipated to be started on June 19 and completed by August 15.

Work Hours: 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday

Impact: Building Main Entrance will not be accessible during the construction phase. Expect moderate noise from demolition and other impacts typically associated with construction projects

Access: Hartley Hall main entrance will be used to access Wallach Hall due to the temporary closure of the building main entrance.
