Columbia Housing Operations Team Replaces Over 25,000 Batteries Across 35 Residence Halls

January 27, 2026

The Columbia Housing team recently completed its battery replacement program, a routine maintenance effort that requires coordination and organized execution. The operations team manually replaced a total of 26,598 batteries, servicing 4,433 locks across 35 residence halls. While swapping a single battery is a minor task, scaling that process across the entire Housing portfolio requires a comprehensive logistical operation.

The project prioritized reducing waste and recycling responsibly, partnering with certified recyclers to divert 1,252 pounds of batteries from landfills.

The electronic lock system allows the Housing team to remotely access and program doors. It is one of several ongoing projects to modernize the Columbia Housing portfolio and improve the residential student experience.
