Step 3: Complete Check-In

Depending on your building, you may need to finalize the Check-In process by using a Columbia University ID (CUID) encoder.  Before you can encode your card, you must initiate Check-In through the Housing Portal.

Some, but not all, buildings have an encoder in their lobby. Use the table below to learn more.

How to Use the Encoder

Insert your CUID face up into the encoder with the magnetic strip on the bottom right side. Watch this tutorial to learn how to use the encoder. 

Troubleshooting & Assistance

  • You must initiate Check-In through the Housing Portal before you can encode your card.
    • Log in to the Housing Portal and select "Web Check In/Out" from the menu. Follow the prompts to complete the process.
    • This process will become available ~24 hours before your selected Check-In time.
       
  • In-person assistance
    • September 1: RAs will be station in the lobbies of buildings with encoders
    • September 2: Go to Cafe 212, East Campus, or Hartley Lounge
    • After September 2: Go to the Hartley Hospitality Desk

What Happens Next

After you have encoded your CUID, you may proceed to your room. Remember to complete our brief, three question survey and the Room Condition Report (RCR) before unpacking your belongings.
